Curtis Hanson (1945-2016)
More tragic than Brangelina’s separation this week was the news that Hollywood writer/director/producer Curtis Hanson had died on Tuesday, aged 71.
Hanson dropped out of high school to pursue a lifetime career in the arts, cutting his teeth in the film industry co-writing the film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror (1970). Box office success followed with thrillers The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992) and The River Wild (1994).
His most critically acclaimed films varied in style and content, and not all reaped big box office returns, notably FRED favourite Wonder Boys (2000). But L.A. Confidential (1997) immortalised Hanson’s legacy amongst his peers; the instant classic noir won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Kim Basinger) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Hanson and Brian Helgeland), and was nominated for seven others, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also launched the Hollywood careers of Australian actors Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, and marked the debut of Simon Baker.
Hanson had also helmed audience favourites 8 Mile (2002) and In Her Shoes (2005). His final film, co-directed by Michael Apted, was Chasing Mavericks (2012).

Curtis Hanson’s Hollywood legacy includes The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (1992), The River Wild (1994), L.A. Confidential (1997), Wonder Boys (2000), 8 Mile (2002), In Her Shoes (2005), and Chasing Mavericks (2012).

Two days ago, we reported that Friday Nights @ FRED’s would not be broadcast on Friday, 16 September. Little did we know that while the FRED the ALIEN team were busy with their stage debut, producing The Writer for Melbourne Fringe and The Boardwalk Republic, the LISTERnator had broken into FRED’s Shed and put out a podcast of his own. (We are discussing whether or not to press charges.)
Here’s the LISTERnator’s take on Nerdy News and everything else pop culture―including his love for Batman and anti-nerd tirade. Prepare yourself for the cyborg’s most epic rant!
Friday Nights @ FRED’s returns back to normal on 23 September evening… we hope! And if you’re missing Kendall, Michael, and Phillip, have your Friday Nights @ FRED’s binge and remember to rate and review us on iTunes.
Friday Nights @ FRED’s will not be broadcast tonight.
The FRED the ALIEN team are in the middle of our first stage production run. We have been working hard over the past few months to bring The Writer to the Melbourne Fringe Festival and the Boardwalk Republic, and are overwhelmed by how much our audience has embraced the show! Naturally, we want to deliver the best theatrical experience we can, so our attention is squarely focused on The Writer this week.
In the meantime, feel free to have your FN@F binge! Rate and review us on iTunes and be sure to listen in to Friday Nights @ FRED’s next Friday evening for your pop culture news and views.
The Friday Nights @ FRED’s team put the call-out for your opinion on hiveminds. They asked:
Which hivemind would you rather be a part of? Would you be a Zombie, a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance and Associates, or part of The Network?
Here’s their 2¢ worth as well as feedback from you!
An all-new #popculture #podcast will be out tonight at https://soundcloud.com/fredthealienproductions

Iron Man cautiously observes from a distance at Canada’s finest on the alternative cover of Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides (out now).
One of the world’s most popular (and, let’s face it, sexiest) leaders, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appeared on an alternative cover of Marvel’s Civil War II: Choosing Sides (Issue No. 5). Mr. Trudeau offers advice to superheroes, following in the tradition of his father, Pierre Trudeau (1919–2000), who appeared in Marvel’s The Uncanny X-Men (Volume 120) in 1979 during his own term in Canadian politics’ top job.
For the latest pop culture news and views wrap-up, be sure to listen and subscribe to Friday Nights @ FRED’s on SoundCloud and iTunes, with selected highlights on YouTube.
