The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards celebrated the best achievements of film on Sunday night. Many Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild recipients of this awards season also took home BAFTA’s bronze mask. With a few beneficiaries bucking the trend, such as Lion‘s deserving lead Dev Patel, Damien Chazelle‘s charming musical La La Land dominated unsurprisingly.

In case you missed it, here is FRED the ALIEN’s summary of this year’s BAFTA Award winners. Congratulations to all, and thank you for entertaining, moving, and inspiring us at the movies!

fnf-generic-imageIn case you missed it, the Friday Nights @ FRED’s team summarise the past seven days in pop culture.

A little delirious, Kendall, Michael, and Phillip refuse to behave themselves, sorting through news and rumours before indirectly serving notice to a FRED the ALIEN intern. (Update: The intern is still with us! -Management)

With amazing feedback from you, the team discuss this week’s ‘Popcorn Culture’ question:

Which actor’s portrayal of Batman do you like the most and why?

Van Wayne

Post Script:

In answer to Phillip’s question in the podcast, Vanderveer ‘Van’ Wayne is cannon (Earth-One) – but, of course, it is complicated – and is a young cousin of Bruce Wayne. Because Bruce’s father Thomas’s only sibling is Philip, who didn’t have children, Van cannot be Bruce’s first cousin. His only comic book appearance was in the ‘Batman #148’ (June, 1962) story ‘The Boy Who Was Robin’. He was created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff.

Due to the decimation of the DC Multiverse in the Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) series,Van was removed from existence. However, Convergence prevented the decimation retrospectively, saving all alternate realities (including Van’s) in an ‘evolved’ form.

FN@F Nerdy News Update: Paris Jackson angry over late father’s portrayal

The casting of Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson in an up-coming television movie, part of the Urban Myths series, caused an uncomfortable and vocal stir among the late pop legend’s legion of fans. Images released online of Fiennes as Jackson only further aggravated those who disapproved of a Caucasian British actor playing a black American―and one so iconic at that.

Jackson’s daughter, Paris, expressed her anger on Twitter over how father and late godmother (portrayed by Stockard Channing) were being represented in the production:

Paris Jackson replied to a tweet asking about her thoughts on the Urban Myths telemovie. (Image: www.twitter.com)

I’m so incredibly offended by it, as I’m sure plenty of people are as well, and it honestly makes me want to vomit.
It angers me to see how obviously intentional it was for them to be this insulting, not just towards my father, but my godmother Liz as well.
Where is the respect? They worked through blood sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies. shameful portrayal.
He made a point of it plenty of times to express his pride in his roots. He would never have wanted this.

Also featuring Harry Potter‘s Rupert Grint as a friend of Adolf Hitler and Brian Cox as Marlon Brando, watch the trailer to Urban Myths and let us know what you think!

FN@F Nerdy News Update: George Michael and Carrie Fisher

The epitome of 1980s male sex symbolism, George Michael came of age with the single ‘Faith’ as a solo artist. (Image http://www.georgemichael.com)

Remembering George Michael⎯

George Michael, whose death on Christmas Day shocked his legions of fans, is being remembered for his LGBTI+ advocacy and charitable donations as well as his popular music.

The one-half of Wham!, whose ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ became one of the defining songs of the 1980s, pursued a successful solo career in 1987. Michael enjoyed a resurgence in 1998 when he was arrested for ‘engaging in a lewd act’ in a public restroom at the Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills, allowing him to speak openly of his sexuality. He used the event as the subject of the song ‘Outside’, as evident in the single’s humorous music video clip.

Manager, Michael Lippman, has sighted the iconic artist’s cause of death was due to ‘heart failure’ and that Michael had died ‘peacefully at home’ in England.

Tributes continue to flow for the singer-songwriter and LGBTI+ activist. Mariah Carey called him a ‘genius’ and a well-meaning Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Twitter, accidentally praising a different (and very alive) British singer:

Gellar went on to clarify:

Carrie Fisher Health Update⎯

Actor, author, and mental health advocate, Carrie Fisher is now in a ‘stable condition’ after going into cardiac arrest during an eleven-hour flight from London to Los Angeles.

Her mother, Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated entertainer Debbie Reynolds, has thanked fans for their well-wishes and has said that the family would keep the concerned public updated of any further developments.

Fisher, who is one of pop culture’s most recognisable women for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, has been in hospital since Friday.
