The Simpsons was created by Matt Groening for The Tracey Ullman Show, beginning its association with the programme on 19 April 1987. After three seasons of shorts, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time series, debuting on 17 December 1989. The series quickly became a phenomenon.
